Chapter 8
Derek called that afternoon to say he'd gotten hung up at the office. So, after I'd wandered the shops and tourist traps down by the beach, I grabbed a light dinner and went back to his place, where I decided a swim in his pool would be perfect after a day in the sun.
It was. Jesus, it was heaven. The afternoon heat had lost some of its ferocity, but it was still warm enough for a pleasant swim.
Cooled off and relaxed, I sat back against the edge of the pool, arms stretched across the sides, and gazed out at the ocean. I'd always loved infinity pools, but I'd never had a chance to appreciate one with this kind of view.
The terrace was raised just enough so when I sat like this, the golf course didn't get in the way, and the water appeared to extend all the way to the horizon. I could only imagine how it would look when the sun finally set, which wouldn't be long now.
My mood was still a little dark, but as the clock took me farther from my conversation with Ben and closer to being with Derek again, the knots unwound. Even more so when a low rumble caught my attention. I craned my neck, listening, and sure enough, the sound came closer. Another rumble sent a dull vibration through the concrete behind my shoulders. The engine cut off and the garage door came back to life, undoubtedly sealing the man and his silver sports car inside. I closed my eyes, smiling to myself.
Moments later, the sliding glass door opened, and tension melted out of every muscle in my body.
Ah, you're here.
I tilted my head back and met Derek's eyes.
He grinned down at me. "Now that is something I like coming home to."
"What? Your own pool?"
"With a half-naked man in it, yes."
I turned around and when I pushed myself up, Derek knelt and kissed me lightly. I started to get out, but he put a hand on my shoulder.
"Stay there," he said. "I'll join you."
I eased myself back into the water. "Not going to argue with that."
"Didn't think you would." He nodded toward the horizon. "The sun will be going down soon. Trust me, you want to see it from here."
"I don't doubt that for a minute."
He stood. "Let me go up and change clothes. I'll be right back."
In minutes, he returned in a pair of blue swim trunks and slipped into the water beside me. He wrapped his arms around me and we kissed away a long, relaxing moment before we both sat back against the side of the pool.
"Take care of everything that needed it?" I asked.
"Yeah. Was just a bullshit conference call and some crap that could have been dealt with without me." He clicked his tongue and shook his head. "What can you do, though?" He tilted his head to one side, then the other, and winced.
"You okay?"
Grimacing, he nodded. "Shouldn't let this stuff get me wound up, I really shouldn't.
